DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY FMIPA UNM has successfully held the first international seminar or 1st Chemistry International Conference (CIC) with the theme “Enriching Chemistry Teaching Learning to Produce Internationally Qualified Graduates”. This seminar was held on Tuesday, 15 November 2022 in a hybrid manner (6th Floor of the Dean’s Building, FMIPA UNM and via zoom). There were sources from several countries including Prof. Barbara Oakley from Oakland University (key informant), Prof. Christopher Thompson from Monash University, Prof. Ryo Honda from Kanazawa University, Prof. Muhammad Danial from Makassar State University, Dr. Ronny Horax of Arkansas University, Dr. Jonathan Tew of Nottingham University, and Dr. David Read of Sheffield University.
The seminar activities which were carried out in 1 day were attended by various groups ranging from lecturers, teachers, students and students. The enthusiasm of the main participants from UNM Chemistry students made this seminar go very well and lively. Dr. Eng. Sulfikar, S.Si. MT. as the head of the 1st CIC activity in her remarks said that In this seminar, we chose a topic that may help our efforts to increase the quality of teaching-learning in our department to produce high-quality graduates. For this, we reached out for the best practices applied at the top universities by prominent experts and practitioners in related fields. We are pleased that our reaching out to these best universities are graciously responsive. Six scientists from overseas and one from our academic staff with a range of expertise in teaching and learning and experience in chemistry-related field research gathered today to share their knowledge. One of them kindly visits us here, which excites and inspires our students and lecturers.
The dean of FMIPA UNM (Prof. Dr. Suwardi Annas, Ph.D.) in his remarks said that these international seminars are not only expected to be a forum to disseminate the latest research findings in the chemistry and education field but also a networking forum to foster more collaboration among researchers, academics, school teachers, and also graduate students joining this event. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Chair of the 1 st Chemistry International Conference (CIC) for organizing this special event as a platform for networking as well as for exchanging knowledge and best practices in the field of Chemistry education.
